factors to watch
[Introduction]
It is hard to say where microblogging will continue to go in the next few years. Those who are using microblogging are using it differently than they did when it first came to be. In the next few years, Twitter will more likely than not continue to be used by businesses in order to gain more customers and recognition, and journalists will use it to break news. Sites like Twitter may be the sole way in which people receive their news. It may be a much more common way for people to gain employment. Will new microblogging sites come about that surpass the more popular ones like Twitter and Tumblr? It’s possible. Microblogging could overtake other social media websites and become solely what people use, or vice versa. It could continue to change the way in which people watch and enjoy television. With the ever-changing technology, to keep up with the needs and wants of people, microblogging will go through some changes as well.
[Factors to Watch]
One trend that is coming to be on microblogging sites and will more likely continue to grow is it is becoming a way for people to get a job. People who are using platforms like Twitter are putting themselves out there for employers to take a look at them, whether they realize it or not. Seth Meyers hired one of his writers for Late Night after finding him on Twitter. The guy was working in IT, before making the move out to New York. Meyers thought his tweets were funny and wanted to have him on staff (Schneider, 2014, para.1). Meyers said in an interview, “Twitter has completely democratized the way we find writers … You read their last six months of Tweets and you can tell immediately if they have a great sense of humor,” (Schneider, 2014, para. 3). If people present themselves in a certain manner, and post certain things, then there is a chance an employer will take a liking to them. This is not to say that Twitter and other microblogging platforms are going to be the sole way somebody gets hired, but it was not like this when these microblogging sites came to be. They did not give somebody the chance to work on a late night talk show, but they may continue to do so.
People’s needs and wants are always changing, so social media and microblogging sites change to accommodate that. Right now, people want everything right at their fingertips and they want it easily and fast. Microblogging suits people’s needs because of that, and while there are still some people who prefer to get their news the old fashioned way, it is possible that microblogging will continue in the direction that it is going and change the way people get their information. Save for a website, Twitter may become the only way people get their news. Newspapers may become completely obsolete, as people will be getting their news headlines in 140 characters or less or via a reblog on Tumblr. The sites that are used to make tweets longer may be used more in order to accommodate the news that will be coming out.
Twitter may become even more engaging than it already is between people and televisions shows (Warden, 2013, para. 5). Televisions shows are using Twitter and the concept of the hashtag to engage their viewers while the episode is airing, but it may come to the point where Twitter users are providing more input for an episode, rather than contributing with a single tweet revolving around a show’s hashtag. Hawaii 5-0 recently did an episode that was “fan built” and in the future, that may be done via Twitter instead of the show’s website. The producers can give some say to the viewers in what they want to see, by tweeting a certain hashtag, or favoriting or retweeting a specific tweet. Those on twitter can choose the characters, the outfits, the storyline, and the ending. It allows the viewer to have a say in what they want to see in an episode, while simultaneously bringing more attention to the show itself.
[Conclusion]
Given the recent developments of microblogging, it is clear that it is not going anywhere anytime soon. There will be changes over time, as there have been, and they may be for the better or they may be for the worse. There may not be drastic changes in the next couple of years for microblogging sites, but they will continue to grow and expand who is using them and why they are being used. They may allow for more say when it comes to someone’s favorite TV show, rather than tweeting out “Can’t wait for the return of #Graceland.” Microblogging video sites may continue to rise, as people may rather watch something short instead of reading something short. Microblogging has not been around for that long, and it has been popular for less time than that, but given the way it is going, with thousands of people joining in each day, microblogging will still be around in the foreseeable future.
